Supporting Independence: How Herts Ability Empowers Those Living with Dementia

At Herts Ability, we’re not just about providing support; we’re about enabling independence and enhancing quality of life, especially for those living with dementia. As Dementia Action Week approaches on Monday 13th May, we’re gearing up to continue our mission of empowerment and awareness.

What is Dementia Action Week?

Dementia Action Week serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of understanding and support for individuals and families affected by dementia. At Herts Ability, we’re proud to be a part of this awareness-raising campaign. Did you know? In 2023, we witnessed a significant increase in calls to our dementia support line, showing the growing need for information and assistance in this area.

Driving and Dementia: Addressing Concerns

One common concern for individuals with dementia and their families is the issue of driving. Many believe that a dementia diagnosis automatically means giving up the freedom of driving. However, this doesn’t have to be the case.

At Herts Ability, we provide fitness-to-drive assessments conducted by our expert team consisting of Occupational Therapists and DVSA Approved Driving Instructors. These assessments offer peace of mind to both the individual and their loved ones, ensuring safety on the road while maintaining independence.

Our Approach to Assessments

Our assessment process is designed to be supportive and understanding. We recognise the unique challenges individuals with dementia may face and provide a comfortable environment for discussion. It’s not about perfection; it’s about ensuring safety and well-being for all road users.

Beyond Driving: Supporting Independence

While driving may eventually become impractical or unsafe, our support doesn’t end there. We offer coping strategies to manage dementia symptoms and assist individuals in transitioning to alternative modes of transportation. Our goal is to empower individuals to remain independent and engaged in their communities.
