In a groundbreaking move, Primark has unveiled its first-ever adaptive fashion range, designed specifically for individuals with disabilities. This new collection, launched this week, includes an impressive 49 items of menswear and womenswear, making it one of the most comprehensive adaptive lines available in high street retail.
The excitement follows the success of Primark’s initial adaptive range last year, which received an overwhelming positive response. The retailer is committed to making fashion-forward clothing accessible to everyone, and this latest offering expands that mission significantly. The collection features innovative designs such as a trench coat that can be easily removed while seated, along with hidden access points for stomas and insulin pumps.
For 2025, Primark plans to broaden its adaptive range, introducing options in menswear, womenswear, nightwear, and underwear. This expansion is a result of an 18-month collaboration with trailblazing fashion designer Victoria Jenkins, founder of the adaptive fashion brand Unhidden.
Jenkins, a passionate advocate for disability inclusion, leverages her personal experiences with chronic illness and over 16 years in the fashion industry to create clothing that minimises barriers for those with disabilities.
Throughout the design process, Primark has actively engaged with the disabled community, conducting focus groups and hands-on fit sessions to gather insights and feedback. The result is a range that incorporates features such as magnetic zippers, snap fastenings, waist loops for easier dressing, and hidden openings for tube, stoma, or catheter access. The collection also considers the needs of wheelchair users, ensuring that everyone can enjoy stylish and functional clothing.
Jenkins expressed her pride in the launch, stating, “It’s an incredibly proud moment to see this collection go live and see adaptive fashion come to the high street on this scale for the first time. Disabled people face lots of barriers in their lives, and clothing shouldn’t be one of them.” She hopes this launch will empower individuals with disabilities to break free from the limitations of traditional fashion, moving away from a uniform of joggers and t-shirts.
Despite significant strides in the industry, research commissioned by Primark reveals that 24% of people in the UK live with a disability, and three-quarters struggle to find accessible clothing. The survey further highlights that 70% of respondents have had to spend more on clothing that meets their needs, while 80% feel excluded from fashionable options. Primark aims to change this narrative by providing diverse styles and choices for everyone.
The adaptive fashion collection will be available in 96 shops across 10 countries, with Click and Collect services starting on January 28, 2025.
Primark is setting a new standard for inclusivity in fashion, proving that style and accessibility can go hand in hand. This launch is just the beginning, and we look forward to seeing more innovative, adaptive options in the future!
