On December 3rd, we join millions worldwide to celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024 (IDPD). This annual event shines a light on the achievements and challenges faced by persons with disabilities and highlights the need for inclusion, equality, and accessibility in all aspects of life.
At Herts Ability, we’re proud to support this vital cause – not just today but every day – by empowering people with disabilities to live more independent, fulfilling lives.
Why IDPD Matters
Globally, over 1.3 billion people, representing 16% of the population, live with significant disabilities. Despite their enormous contributions to society, persons with disabilities often face systemic barriers in education, employment, healthcare, and mobility. This year, IDPD calls for action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by focusing on the inclusion of, and collaboration with, persons with disabilities.
Herts Ability: 66 Years of Empowerment
Since 1958, Herts Ability has been dedicated to helping individuals achieve independence through tailored advice, innovative solutions, and compassionate support. We recognise that mobility is a cornerstone of independence and aim to make transportation accessible for everyone.
Our Hubs Mobility Advice Service: Independence Through Mobility
For those facing challenges in maintaining independence due to mobility or medical conditions, our Hubs Mobility Advice Service is here to help. Led by Jenny, our Hub Lead, this service provides personalised guidance, assessments, and training to improve confidence, safety, and accessibility in transportation.
Here’s how we can help:
- Travel Training: Guidance on navigating public transport and multimodal travel options.
- Disability Awareness: Training to promote inclusivity and understanding.
- Powered Mobility Advice: Assessments and tips for safely using wheelchairs and scooters.
James, our Lead Driving Assessor, sums it up beautifully:
“Living with a disability doesn’t need to be a barrier to living an independent and full life. I’m proud of the work we do at Herts Ability, in keeping many people independent through driving, travel, and transport. Going the extra mile always helps our clients go many more miles.”
Let’s Make Inclusion a Priority
On this IDPD, let’s work together to break down barriers and champion accessibility. Whether through small steps like offering a helping hand or larger initiatives like those at Herts Ability, we can all play a role in creating a more inclusive society.
