At Herts Ability, we believe that every individual deserves the chance to experience the joy and independence that driving can bring. That’s why we were thrilled to welcome ten extraordinary students from Lonsdale School to our Harlow Outreach program. Lonsdale School, renowned for its dedication to educating young people with physical and neurological impairments, brought along a group of students with diverse and complex needs. This visit was not just another outing; it was a day filled with excitement, learning, and unforgettable firsts.
A Day of Firsts on the Off-Road Track
Greeted warmly by our dedicated Herts Ability team – Mark, Simon, Linda, James, and our CEO Sean – the Lonsdale students were in for a treat. For many, this was their very first driving experience, making use of our private and secure off-road track. This unique setting provided the perfect environment for these young drivers to explore and enjoy the thrill of driving without any prior need for a provisional licence.
Under the expert guidance of our skilled instructors, each student had the opportunity to get behind the wheel. Some used conventional controls, others required specialised adaptations, and two students even drove from their wheelchairs using a specially equipped Mercedes-Benz vehicle! The sight of these young individuals conquering the track was nothing short of inspiring!
Learning Through Fun: The Theory Test Workshop
When they weren’t driving, the students participated in an engaging theory test workshop led by our Lead Assessor, James. This session wasn’t just about learning the rules of the road; it was a chance for the students to challenge themselves and each other. James observed, “All of the students approached the theory test with enthusiasm and a desire to learn. Of course, they loved taking part in the hazard perception trial and treated it as a challenge. It was great to see the students learn and improve in this short time, and it would be fantastic to see them succeed in the future.”
Celebrating Achievements and Looking Ahead
As the day drew to a close, every student was awarded a certificate of achievement – a token of their hard work and bravery. The sense of accomplishment was palpable, and the smiles on their faces were the perfect end to a perfect day. But this isn’t the end of their journey with Herts Ability. Inspired by their experiences, some students have already booked further assessments to identify their individual needs and continue their driving journey!

At Herts Ability, we are committed to making driving accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Our partnership with schools like Lonsdale is a testament to our dedication to inclusivity and empowerment.
