Herts Ability Supports International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2023

December 3rd is International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). The theme this year is “United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities”. On this Day, Herts Ability joins partners around the world to call for action to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs) for, with, and by persons with disabilities.

Did you know?

More than 1.3 billion people experience significant disability today, which represents 16% of the global population!

Many persons with disabilities die earlier, are at increased risk of developing a range of health conditions, and experience more limitations in everyday functioning than the rest of the population.

We call these poorer health outcomes “health inequities” because they are largely avoidable and driven by unjust factors within and beyond the health sector.

These factors include, for example, discrimination in our societies, inequitable policies, the determinants of health, lack of access or quality of care, and negative attitudes of health workers – to name a few.

These health inequities are a stark reminder that persons with disabilities are too often left behind, and that achieving good health and well-being for all (SDG3) requires the meaningful participation and empowerment of persons with disabilities.

Achieving the SDGs for, with, and by persons with disabilities is now, more than ever, within our reach, so long as we are united.

In 2019, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres launched the Disability Inclusion Strategy (UNDIS) to bring disability inclusion in every work and core functions of the entire UN system.

The UNDIS has given organizations the tools to initiate a bold systemic transformation, and is driving unprecedented progress for, with, and by persons with disabilities around the world.

These achievements are remarkable demonstrations of the value of systemic planning for disability inclusion, a cause for celebration, and a source of aspiration to pursue these efforts!

Here’s how Herts Ability enables people to lead an independent life, not just today but every day!

Since 1958 our aim has been to help people with disabilities live more independent lives.

Maintaining independence through the freedom of mobility helps the quality of life for everybody, but this isn’t always easy, especially those with limited mobility or a medical condition that impacts your independence.

That’s why we’re excited to showcase our Hubs Mobility Advice Service – offering help and advice for those who need it most.

The Hubs Mobility Advice Service can help people to feel connected again, build confidence when using public transport, reduce stress and the risk of accidents by offering independent, individualised advice on transport options in your area.

Our information centre for all local transport services – from buses, to trains, to taxis – the Hubs Mobility Advice Service provides accurate, supportive and actionable advice.

As well as dealing directly with the public, the Hubs Mobility Advice Service also provides information to the local network of care associations, such as health professionals, community groups and rehab services.

Led by Herts Ability’s Hub Lead, Jenny, the Hubs Mobility Advice Service provides assessments and training too. Instructing on disability awareness, travel training, multimodal travel, and helping people plan and navigate using public transport.

We can also offer guidance for the safe use of powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

We have Hubs open and ready to help you – offering support to those challenged by maintaining their independence!
