Herts Ability Supports GBS/CIDP Awareness Month

May marks the beginning of GBS/CIDP Awareness Month and we’ve got more than a million reasons to care, starting with our client – Claire – who was recently declared ‘Fit to Drive’ at our Harlow Centre. Here she shares this crucial message with our friends and followers:

“Five years ago, I noticed occasional pins and needles in my feet and thought nothing of it. Six months later, I found myself unable to stand, walk, or even care for myself.

I was admitted to the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery in London, where I spent six months, followed by a month-long stay in a neuro rehab unit at the Wellington Hospital.

The diagnosis: Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy NF155 CIDP. This debilitating autoimmune disease has left me disabled, likely permanently.

Raising awareness of CIDP and its acute sibling GBS Guillain-Barre Syndrome is crucial.

Prior to falling ill, I had been driving competently and confidently for over 40 years.

However, my illness rendered me disabled, casting doubt on my ability to even walk, let alone drive.

Fortunately, with a treatment that partially restored my abilities, my neurologist suggested I explore the possibility of driving again.

The prospect of reclaiming some independence was exhilarating, so I reached out to Herts Ability to understand the process. Their assistance was invaluable; they addressed all my queries and alleviated my concerns. Encouraged by their support, I decided to proceed.”

Herts Ability provides a professional, helpful, and supportive service. Visit eu.gbs-cidp.org to learn more about how you can contribute to raising awareness during this significant month!
