At 73 years old, Brian Phillips from Flitwick, Bedfordshire, has regained his independence thanks to essential car adaptations funded by a Driving Assessment Grant (DAG) and the expert support of Herts Ability, part of the Driving Mobility network.
A Lifetime of Driving
Brian, a retired electrical contractor, has been driving for over five decades. Having spent years traveling across the UK for work, driving remained a key part of his independence after retirement. However, two years ago, Brian suffered two transient ischemic attacks (TIA), which led to a gradual loss of use in his left hand. He adapted by switching from a manual to an automatic transmission car, but his daughter, Lisa, remained concerned about his driving capabilities and safety.
Seeking Support from Herts Ability
Determined to help her father maintain his independence, Lisa discovered Herts Ability online and reached out for assistance. The friendly admin team promptly arranged an assessment for Brian at our Luton satellite centre. There, he met Sarah (Occupational Therapist) and James (Lead Driving Assessor), who guided him through the process.
During the assessment, Brian was introduced to a steering aid with a remote keypad for secondary controls. Within minutes, he quickly grasped the concept, demonstrating his adaptability and willingness to learn. He described the experience as “brilliant and fun” and even noted that James had helped improve his overall driving standard.

Overcoming Financial Barriers with the DAG
While the assessment was successful, Brian faced a significant financial challenge in getting his own car adapted. Fortunately, the DAG – provided by the Motability Foundation and administered by Driving Mobility – offered a solution. This grant supports disabled drivers who are not Motability Scheme customers by contributing to the costs of driving assessments, vehicle adaptations, and familiarisation lessons at a Driving Mobility Centre.
With the guidance of James, Brian completed a simple grant application, and within days, he received the approval he needed. Thanks to the DAG, Brian was able to adapt his vehicle and continue driving safely.
Independence Restored
Brian is immensely grateful to Herts Ability, Driving Mobility, and the generous support of the DAG. “I would like to thank all the wonderful staff at Herts Ability for their outstanding service. Their knowledge, professionalism, and care are clear to see. I’d recommend Driving Mobility’s network of Mobility Centres, such as Herts Ability, to anyone needing support with their independence and would urge them not to feel nervous.”
Brian’s story highlights the importance of accessible driving solutions and the incredible impact that organisations like Herts Ability can have on individuals’ lives. If you or a loved one are facing similar challenges, don’t hesitate to reach out to Herts Ability for expert advice and support.
