Driving with Dyspraxia: Everything you need to know!

Dyspraxia can affect the way your mind processes actions. This can make coordination, movement, balance, organisation skills and hand-eye coordination difficult. All these skills are required for driving! The good news is that Herts Ability is on hand to help you every step of the way…

Dyspraxia: The Facts

  • Another name for Dyspraxia is Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)
  • Dyspraxia is thought to affect up to 6% of the population
  • 2% of people are severely affected by Dyspraxia

First off, you’ll need a driving assessment with an Occupational Therapist and Specialist Approved Driving Instructor. This will identify what you find easy and what challenges you have, when it comes to driving. The Herts Ability team will work to counter your challenges and make those things easy too.

Once the driving assessment is complete, you could join the Herts Ability Driving School. The expert driving instructors will have great knowledge of your Dyspraxia and how it affects you. They’ll work at a pace that suits you and offer support all the way to your driving test.

Did you know? 🤔

Dan completed an assessment recently and has joined the Herts Ability Driving School. He had difficulties coordinating his hands when steering, so a simple steering aid was added to allow safe, single hand steering, taking away the need for coordination. Here’s what he had to say about Herts Ability:

“Herts Ability staff are very professional and helpful, very approachable, and I’m grateful for all the theory tests and driving support they’ve offered.

They know how to analyse the situation to best identify a person’s needs and work out the best way forward – I would recommend Herts Ability to anyone with difficulties”.

If you want to be like Dan and break down those barriers, simply get in touch with Herts Ability!
