Dementia & Driving in 2024

Did you know that 1 in 3 people born in the UK today will be diagnosed with dementia in their lifetime? It’s time to make a difference to the lives of those living with dementia by raising awareness and understanding for the condition they live with.

One common concern for individuals with dementia and their families is the issue of driving. Many believe that a dementia diagnosis automatically means giving up the freedom of driving. However, this doesn’t have to be the case.

Do you have a relative who has been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s and you are worried about them continuing to drive? Herts Ability can help!

At Herts Ability, we provide fitness-to-drive assessments conducted by our expert team consisting of Occupational Therapists and DVSA Approved Driving Instructors. These assessments offer peace of mind to both the individual and their loved ones, ensuring safety on the road while maintaining independence.

Supporting Independence: While driving may eventually become impractical or unsafe, our support doesn’t end there. We offer coping strategies to manage dementia symptoms and assist individuals in transitioning to alternative modes of transportation. Our goal is to empower individuals to remain independent and engaged in their communities.

Our Approach to Assessments: Our assessment process is designed to be supportive and understanding. We recognise the unique challenges individuals with dementia may face and provide a comfortable environment for discussion. It’s not about perfection; it’s about ensuring safety and well-being for all road users. Anybody with a full licence can refer themselves for an assessment.
