Client Testimonial: Andrew’s Journey Back to Driving with Herts Ability

At Herts Ability, we take pride in helping individuals regain their independence on the road. Let’s celebrate our client, Andrew, who has successfully passed his driving assessment and is now ‘fit to drive’ with adapted controls!

Discovering Herts Ability

When Andrew noticed his multiple sclerosis (MS) affecting his ability to drive safely using his feet, he knew he needed a solution. He found Herts Ability through an internet search and decided to undergo a professional driving assessment.

Facing the Challenges

Andrew had not been able to drive for nearly two years due to his condition. He had to undergo various medical assessments and work through the DVLA’s requirements before considering getting back behind the wheel. Additionally, he was in the process of applying for PIP, making this period particularly challenging.

The Assessment Experience

Andrew’s assessment was conducted in two parts:

  1. Initial Assessment – This included an evaluation of his cognitive abilities and a trial using hand controls. The team determined that with proper adaptations, he could still drive safely.
  2. Driving Lessons & Final Assessment – He worked with Matt, one of our specialist instructors, to adapt to driving with hand controls. After completing his training, he underwent a final driving assessment with Jane and Simon, where he successfully demonstrated his ability to drive safely.

Although nervous at first, Andrew found the experience both reassuring and rewarding. Our assessors and instructors helped him feel at ease, guiding him through each step of the process with patience and encouragement.

Working with Our Driving Instructor

Andrew worked closely with Matt, one of our expert driving instructors. Despite the long travel times to meet up for lessons, he found the experience incredibly valuable. Matt not only helped him prepare for the assessment but also improved his overall driving habits built over 40 years of experience. As Andrew puts it, “I think I will have Matt as an earworm when driving for some time to come!”

Regaining Confidence and Independence

Now that Andrew has successfully passed his assessment, he is excited to get his car adapted and return to the road. Reflecting on the journey, he shared, “The process has restored my belief that, despite my disability, I can continue driving and regain my independence. I won’t have to rely on family, friends, buses, and taxis anymore.”

Advice for Others Considering a Driving Assessment

Andrew strongly encourages others in similar situations to take action:

“Rather than continuing to drive and hoping for the best, get assessed and make the necessary adaptations. A good friend in the Metropolitan Police Traffic Unit once told me that if you’re involved in an accident, you could be deemed at fault simply because of your condition. Getting assessed ensures your safety and the safety of others.”

Why Choose Herts Ability?

Andrew wholeheartedly recommends Herts Ability, praising our team’s dedication and support. “The staff are incredibly helpful, ensuring that each person gets the best outcome possible. Whether it’s the assessors, instructors, or the behind-the-scenes team members like Tara and David, everyone plays a crucial role in making this journey smooth.”
