At Herts Ability, we are passionate about helping individuals regain their independence and confidence on the road. Today, we celebrate the inspiring journey of John MacNair, who successfully passed his driving assessment at our Welwyn Centre and is now fit to drive again after recovering from a stroke.
A Journey of Determination and Resilience
When John first arrived for his assessment, he felt anxious, but his experience soon became a positive one.
“It went really well. I was anxious before and even when I met the assessors, but they soon helped me relax.”
John’s journey back to driving has been one of patience and perseverance. Having not driven since his stroke two years ago, he wanted to ensure he was truly ready before taking the next step. With the support and guidance of our dedicated assessors, Charis and James, he was able to rebuild his confidence behind the wheel.
“Charis and James were really clear with how things would work. They gave me their time to make sure I was as comfortable as possible. I really enjoyed the driving element and was happy that I could still drive a manual car.”

Overcoming Challenges to Regain Independence
John has been driving for over 30 years, but his stroke significantly impacted his mobility, making driving seem like a distant goal. During his rehabilitation, he built a support network with other stroke survivors, something he continues to maintain and cherish.
“When I had a stroke two years ago, I couldn’t move or walk at first, so driving wasn’t even a consideration. In rehab, I started talking to other patients and developed a small support group. That group still continues, and I want to carry on supporting people as best as I can.”
His inspiring determination to not only recover but also help others showcases his remarkable spirit.
Advice for Others Looking to Get Back on the Road
For anyone considering returning to driving after a medical condition, John has some words of wisdom:
“Get in touch with Herts Ability! They will guide you through every step of the way, but most importantly, give yourself time.”
Looking Forward to New Beginnings
John’s stroke changed the course of his life, leading him away from his high-pressure job. But instead of dwelling on what was lost, he is embracing new opportunities.
“Unfortunately, I am unable to do the job I was in anymore, but I’m looking forward to a new challenge and adventure.”
Driving again means the world to John, as it allows him to regain his independence and support his elderly parents. Indeed, his experience with Herts Ability was so inspiring that he is even considering volunteering or working with us to help others in similar situations!
“I was so inspired by Herts Ability I’d consider volunteering for them or even a real job so that I can help others the way they helped me.”
