Herts Ability is Proud to Support World Stroke Day 2024

At Herts Ability, we are delighted to support World Stroke Day on 29th October 2024. This important day raises awareness about strokes and the profound impact they can have on survivors, their families, and friends.

Driving After a Stroke: What You Need to Know

If you’ve suffered a stroke, you might be wondering whether driving is still an option for you. The good news is that for many people, it is! Following a stroke, you cannot drive for at least one month, but after that, driving can often become a possibility again. Herts Ability is here to support you every step of the way.

We offer full driving assessments that help identify if any physical adaptations are necessary to overcome limb weakness or other physical challenges. Here’s how we can help:

  • Our team of Occupational Therapists and Approved Driving Instructors will work with you to determine the best method of car control for your specific needs.
  • Many people make a full physical recovery and don’t need any adaptations to their car. However, a driving assessment can offer peace of mind by confirming your cognitive recovery as well.
  • Driving is one of the most cognitively demanding tasks we undertake. If changes have occurred, a modified driving style may help you regain your independence behind the wheel.

Once you’re ready to get back to driving, Herts Ability will also assist you with communicating with the DVLA, ensuring that all legal requirements are met.

A Success Story: Maciej Monczak

Our client, Maciej Monczak, is a testament to the positive impact of driving again after a stroke. Here’s what he had to say:

“Getting back on the road is a sign of progress in my rehabilitation. My advice for others who have suffered a stroke is: don’t give up! Even the smallest steps count. Herts Ability was incredibly helpful, and they guided me through the entire process with professionalism and kindness.”

Before his stroke, Maciej was an HGV driver, a crucial part of his daily life. While his HGV license was revoked after the stroke, returning to driving marked a huge milestone in his journey toward recovery and normalcy.

“Another win in this unbelievably hard battle to get back to normality for myself and my family. The staff at Herts Ability were kind and professional, making sure I felt comfortable throughout the entire process.”
