Your go-to Guide: Driving with Arthritis

Arthritis causes pain and inflammation in the joints, commonly starting in hands and feet. This can make driving difficult and, in some cases, make driving feel impossible. It doesn’t have to be that way! Herts Ability is on hand to support the ongoing independence that driving can bring…

Did you know?

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis affects 1% of the UK population
  • The common onset age is 30-50
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis is 2-4 times more common in women than men

During a driving assessment with Herts Ability, our Occupational Therapists and specialist Approved Driving Instructors will help identify a method of car control that could suit your needs, now and in the future.

With a fleet of adapted cars, Herts Ability is likely to find a solution. Once that solution has been found, you might need some lessons to gain familiarity with your new method of car control. We can help there too, with the Herts Ability Driving School and our expert instructors.

Here’s what our recent client Marina had to say about the service at Herts Ability:

“Thank you so much for today, you guys have made me more confident, I am so pleased I came, looking forward to my new chapter!”

When driving isn’t an option or you want someone else to take the wheel, the Herts Ability Hubs Mobility Advice Service can help you plan your journey. We’ll even help you understand your rights when it comes to using public transport, private hire and even air travel!

Also, maybe you could benefit from a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair? Herts Ability can help there too with assessments and advice free of charge. We’ll make sure you choose the correct equipment and that you’re safe to use it.

If Arthritis is stopping you enjoying independence, get in touch, Herts Ability could have a solution!
