Your go-to Guide: Driving after a Spinal Cord injury

Experiencing a spinal cord injury is life changing but the good news is that you can remain independent by continuing to drive. All you need is the expertise of Herts Ability. Here’s how we can help…

During a driving assessment, our Occupational Therapists and specialist Approved Driving Instructors will help identify the safest way for you to enter and exit a car. Once you’re in, you’ll be given the opportunity to try different methods of car control, using our adapted vehicles.

Once the correct method of car control has been identified, you might need some tuition. The Herts Ability Driving School can help there too!

When you’re up to standard and feeling comfortable, the team will help you communicate with the DVLA and support the acquisition of your new adapted car.

This is what our recent client and Patron Jonathan Goodwin had to say:

“I recently took my driving assessment so that I can drive an adapted vehicle using hand controls. What Herts Ability do is extraordinary: They give people their freedom back!

I cannot recommend them highly enough! Being able to drive again is like being given wings.

When you’re in a wheelchair you’re so reliant on people for the things you can’t do.

With the support of Herts Ability, driving can be achievable for a lot of people!”

When driving isn’t an option or, if you want help completing a journey without a car, the Herts Ability Hubs Mobility Advice Service can help you plan. For those shorter journey’s our expert teams could help you identify the best powered wheelchair or mobility scooter

In short, Herts Ability is your key to travelling independence. All you need to do is get in touch!
