Adaptations in Action

After a follow-up assessment Mr Lewis McKenzie was proudly pronounced ‘Fit to Drive’ by the Herts Ability team, using the adaptations outlined by our Assessors Matt Miller and Jane Baker (pictured). Here’s how Lewis’ road to independence was achieved…

Following a stroke that affected Mr McKenzie’s left arm and leg, his Physiotherapist recommended that he had a driving assessment

He attended Herts Ability in January 2023. It was observed that he had reduced range of movement and strength in his left arm.

During the assessment, three methods of vehicle control were trialled. He struggled to steer in the conventional manner with two hands.

A steering aid (ball type) was used and his steering improved in speed. Mr McKenzie said that he felt the ball was beneficial.

Following the assessment, he then received nine hours of tuition with Herts Ability instructors to build up his confidence and skill using the ball, and also to have some refresher roadcraft advice.

In early May 2023, Mr McKenzie was re-assessed and he successfully passed the assessment, demonstrating that he had the physical and cognitive skills required to drive safely.

Subject to DVLA agreement, he should now be able to return to driving following the stroke, using the simple adaptation.

Congratulations to you Lewis!

By the way… if you have a physical impairment and you want to try driving with a different method of vehicle control, with Herts Ability you’ll be given the opportunity to drive vehicles fitted with adaptations!

FACT! Herts Ability has a fleet of dual controlled vehicles with a range of driving and transfer adaptations.

Every vehicle is fitted with dual controls for safety and insurance purposes and all assessments take place in a dual controlled car.

A client can use their own (or an instructor’s vehicle) if it is fitted with dual controls.

As always Herts Ability is happy to help with any request you have.

Our aim is to help YOU get back on the road.
