After having an above knee amputation, Hertfordshire’s Angie Phythian was told that it was unlikely she would walk again and she’d be required to use a wheelchair for mobility. Since then she’s had three goals: to have a bath; to drive; and to swim in the sea! Angie’s now completed the first two and in a few weeks will be doing the third! Congratulations on your route to freedom – we wish you lots of success for the future! Firstly, thank you for taking your assessment with Herts Ability. How did you find out about us?
A family member had also used the service so recommended I contact you.
How did your assessment go?
The assessment went well; very relaxed and thorough from the start. The recommendation of having lessons was perfect and made a huge difference!
Please could you tell us more about the experience – were you nervous? Was it fun? Exciting?
Initially I was nervous, but wanted to get back to driving again, however it was a really pleasant experience and lots of fun. Driving has been my route to freedom!
Please could you tell us more about your own personal journey behind the wheel: when you started driving and how your disability may have affected this journey, and what you’ve done to overcome this…
I’ve been driving since I was 18 and it has always been important to me as it gives me the freedom to be on my own, visit family and friends and be independent. Being able to drive again after having my right leg amputated above the knee is the start of me getting back my independence.
Do you have any advice for someone who is looking to get back behind the wheel?
Go for it! Don’t think it’s impossible, take the advice provided by the assessors and listen.
Please could you tell us more about your own inspiring story, from how you sustained your injury/medical condition and how this has impacted on your life, also, do you have a positive message for others?
I had a knee replacement in my right leg, everything was going well, then stepped out of bed and slipped and my replacement knee, dislocated backward and broke through the skin causing a very complicated brake so an above knee amputation was required. I was told at the time it was unlikely I would walk again and I would be required to use a wheelchair for mobility. I had three goals after all of this: to have a bath, to drive, and to swim in the sea! I have now completed the first two and in a few weeks will be doing the third!
Would you recommend Herts Ability to your friends, if so, why?
Yes, definitely, for the assessment and for the lessons; Simon was fantastic and I learnt so much from him while he was teaching me to use my LFA, I would recommend him to anyone!
What are your thoughts on the COVID safety measures we have implemented?
Spot on – I felt safe at all times.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Just a great big thank you; I have really enjoyed the process and have learnt so much! I have gained my independence. I had been told I would never walk again so being able to walk with crutches and now drive is a huge change for me, I’m so happy!
We provide professional, clinically-led driving and mobility assessments for individuals who have restricted mobility. Our Centre has outreach facilities in South Oxhey, Dunstable and Harlow, bringing the service close to where people live – all focused on helping people with disabilities or life-changing diagnosis to continue driving safely.
